The Axolotl, also known as the Mexican walking fish, is a horrifyingly adorable member of the salamander family. The most unique aspect of this creature is that the gills are exposed and sticking out above its head. While it is extinct in the wild, there are many in captivity because they are used as model organisms. Model organisms’ means it is used for experimentation. The reason it is used is because axolotls have been known to repair a damaged limb, as well as regenerating an additional one, ending up with an extra appendage that makes them attractive to pet owners as a novelty.
